Im running on sooo little sleep but hands down the past 4 days were some of the most fun of my life!
I am still in awe that I went to Machu Picchu yesterday! The first time I saw a picture of it was in my Spanish book in either 9th or 10th grade, and I have wanted to go there ever since. But, first things first...
Wednesday night all 9 of us volunteers went to Cusco. Our Spanish professors helped us make most of our reservations this weekend, so thankfully they helped us get to our hostel. Unfortunately, there are 2 hostels in Cusco by the same name and we happened to go to the wrong one first. The first one (and wrong one) was a 45 minute walk from the heart of Cusco and entirely uphill. We were carrying all of our stuff, it was freezing, and we were so sleepy. We got so excited when we finally got to the hostel, and then they told us we actually had a reservation at the other hostel, a 40 minute walk away....ahhh!! But anyways, the walk to the real hostel was downhill, and one of the employees accompanied us because the new one was apparently in the ghetto (more on that later).
Thursday morning we woke up early for the Inti Raymi parade and festival. People from all over Peru and so many tourists come to Cusco for this. Unfortunately, I felt really sick (from the altitude and cold) so I stayed at the hostel all day and slept. It was actually nice and relaxing and I felt much better later on. The others told me that I didnt miss much and it was hard to see all the festivities from where they were sitting. Thursday night we went out to dinner at and then hung out with a different group of ProWorld volunteers at their hostel. Hostels are so chill and fun and cheap, and to me they make hotels seem like a HUGE rip-off.
I went to bed around midnight and then woke up at 230 AM to catch a van to take us to the train station. Abour our hostel being in the ghetto, as we were sitting in the van about to leave the hostel, two guys jumped another guy and took everything from his pockets and then ran off. We literally saw it happening 6 feet from us and it was so frustrating because we couldnt do anything. Thank God that nothing happened to us because it totally could have!
Gotta go eat, more later!
