The strike yesterday turned a bit violent. Ashley and I passed each other in the street last night as I was on my way to Spanish class so we stopped and talked for a bit. All of a sudden I saw this huge mob yelling and running in our direction and everyone one else in the streets cleared out and ran to hide in the nearest place. Thankfully there was a little store near us so we ducked in there right before the owner shut and locked the door. After we were there about 5 minutes one man inside told us it was safe to go out (even though he wasn't leaving yet...hmm...), but another man told us to wait 5 more minutes.
So we waited, and, of course it would happen this way, the store that we were inside sold chickens. It also happened to be the same store that I had to leave from nausea the one time before that I had visited it with Rosi when she was buying a chicken for dinner. The woman that owns it does all of the chopping, slicing, whatever right for the customer to see, and that combined with its terrible smell is not a good match for my weak stomach :( Finally, a different man checked inside and told us we could get through, so we booked it back to the house, having to walk past the mob. They had calmed down but there were broken plates and stuff in the streets. Scary. Rosi and Jose told us they were just drunk but they still made us all stay home from everything the rest of the night.
This morning at 7, I woke up to more yelling. My first thought is that it had to do with the strike, but it was just German volunteers watching their World Cup game in the upstairs of our house. Man, they were SO into it! They were also drinking a ton of beer, in the morning!
At around 11 Ashley and I went with our family to a Father's Day celebration at Emily and Ashley's school. There were a bunch of games for all of the kids and dads and then there was a picnic afterward. Their school is called Los Andes School and really feels like you're in the Andes because it's out in the country and higher up than the town. We rode bikes to get there because the moto drivers are still on strike! It is warm out today so it was a nice change.
Tomorrow I'm going to Cusco for a ruins tour and then spending tomorrow night there with all of the other volunteers in another hostel. Sunday I might be going white-water rafting but it's possible I'm going to a community on Sunday to help with a play? We'll see, I just go with the flow here :)
Prayer requests:
-My cold/allergies are pretty much gone but please pray that being in Cusco again tomorrow I won't get worse.
Thanks for reading and praying.
Em
