Yesterday was by far my favorite day here in Peru. I first went to my 5th and 6th English class in Yucay. We played a game to review colors where we threw around an eraser (for lack of a better object) in a circle and whoever the eraser was thrown to they had to say a color in 5 seconds, then 2 seconds, etc. They had SO much fun and they suggested that we move the game outside. What they actually meant was that we just play outside, which was fine and a nice break I think. They let me play Peruvian games with them for about an hour, which were full of laughs and fun. Next week they told me that they want to learn animals, fruits, and vegetables and seemed excited about it.
Yesterday afternoon was the Calca womens group, and we me and the 3 new volunteers gave a presentation on alcoholism and especially how it can affect women. Its interesting working for a secular organization because when we talked about treatment, of course the first thing I think of is Christian counseling and prayer and an accountability group. But I cant talk about that here! As far as I know none of the women in this group are Christians, but to hear them talk about their families shows me what great mothers they are. They are also incredibly welcoming. I know I am learning just as much from them as they are from us, if not more.
Anyways, after the presentation, one of the new volunteers led us in yoga. SO FUN. We sat outside in the yard of the house we were meeting at, surrounded by the mountains and the amazing sky and clouds. These women are hilarious as it is, but to see some of them doing these yoga positions was too much, especially the older ones. (Im tagged in some pictures on my facebook if you want to see). The point of doing yoga was as a relaxation technique and a practice that could help someone overcome alcoholism.
Last night after dinner Emily showed Katherine and I a dance that she learned at our school, and then she taught it to us. We ended up dancing for at least an hour, with Emily telling us what to do.
*Side note: Since birth Emily has been obsessed with a song called Ave Maria by a Spanish singer named David Bisbal. I am not exaggerating when I say Ive heard it over 50 times since Ive been here. The song is cheesy but I like it, but the music video is another story. David Bisbal is way to into himself and some of his dance moves (like the karate kick) are laughable. Please go watch it on youtube.
Must go now, more later!
